So when this beautiful 2017 Focus Mares CX LTD Rapha Edition bike came through TPC, I had to pull it aside to take a closer look. Like many cyclocross bikes, The Mares CX was a bike that could effortlessly transition between different genres.

Focus' 2015 Mares cyclocross bike benefited from Kluge's world championship experience. © Cyclocross Magazine Kluge showed us a cantilever model built with SRAM Red and Avid Shorty Ultimate brakes and carbon tubular wheels. "The total weight of this bike is 6.6kg…so you're actually in trouble with the UCI because they allow only 6.8kg," Kluge said.

One of the standout features on Focus' top-end cross bike, is the ISCG standard mount for chain retention. Beyond just including mounts, the Mares CX comes with an aluminum plate-style inner chain guide. While it looks pretty beefy, the Focus rep tells us it weighs less than 50g.

The Focus Mares CX frame is 100% carbon, even down to the curved brake bridge. Focus utilizes the flat-mount design for mounting brakes to their bicycles. 160mm brake rotor up front. Flat-mounting for the rear brake, along with a 140mm rear disc brake rotor. Prologo supply the Mares' custom colored Scratch saddle.
